What is a Domain Name?
A domain name provides an online identity and a contact point for your business. It is what you type in the browser's address bar to go to a specific website. For example, our domain name is: http://www.iiirings.com (Note: it is not necessary to type the symbols http://).
How will 3Rings help me with my domain name?
We will consult with you and do the research to determine what is available. Once you have chosen your domain name we will register it for you. While you don't *own* your domain name (You're really renting it for a specified period) we will manage it for you to ensure that it does not expire (If your domain name expires you can loose it forever). We manage your domain name and field the “junk mail” that results from the registration but guarantee release of your domain name and it’s management to you anytime you wish.
More on Domain names:
Websites are located (or hosted) in computer servers somewhere on the Internet. The location of a website in a server is really specified by a series of numbers, called the IP address (for example: 63.233.136.21). Unless you are a computer this is too hard to remember. You could consider your domain name to be the phone number of the computer but instead of dialing 1-555-555-1234 to call home you could just dial HOME instead
A domain level extension (also known as a Top Level Domain) is the letter combination to the right of the domain name, after the "dot". A domain name like iiirings.com has what we call a "dot com extension". You will also find .net, and .org extensions, along with a host of newly popularized extensions like .biz, .name, .tv, etc., as well as country level domains (.us for the US, .br for Brazil, .it for Italy, and so on). Originally, .com extensions were intended for commercial ventures, while .net's were intended for use by Internet Service Providers and .org's by non-profit organizations or groups. Truth is, this original classification is no longer accurate, and anybody can register a domain name with those extensions.
